Cascade students organize town hall about drunken driving prevention

As Nathan Reeves’ pickup accelerated toward her car, Jacquelyn Bouchard closed her eyes.

The Longview woman kept them closed as Reeves’ truck throttled up and over her Mazda Protege, hooked the rear end and yanked it backward along Highway 30 near Rainier.

When her car finally stopped, Bouchard opened her eyes. She could see nothing, but felt the sharp pain of a crushed ankle.

Only a moment before the accident Bouchard had been laughing in the car with her best friend, Andrew Perry. Her daughter Jayda, 2, and Perry’s daughters Aahlyah, 6, and Monica, 7, sat in the back. Bouchard was close to completing her dog-grooming certificate. Perry had just landed a full-time job with Airgas in Longview.

Life was good.

“We were so giggly and happy that when the headlights came into a our lane, we were laughing, ‘Oh no,’” she said in an interview Wednesday morning. “Our happiness became fear.”

The wreck left Perry with a punctured lung and several broken bones. Aahlyah broke her collarbone and Monica spent 10 days in the hospital with a ruptured bowel and aorta.

Hours after the accident, Reeves still had a blood alcohol level of about 0.23, about three times the legal limit, Bouchard said.

Two years later, Bouchard, 27, wants to keep speaking out against drunk driving. On Wednesday night, she came to a town hall meeting convened by the Cascade Middle School Prevention Club, a group of 13 students who educate fellow students and the community about driving under the influence. Longview police Capt. Robert Huhta and Chaplain Doug Fields also spoke to offer a comprehensive picture of the effects driving under the influence have on the community.

The Prevention Club’s town hall coincided with Alcohol Awareness Month and the upcoming prom season. Longview’s “Every 15 Minutes” program, which simulates drunk driving deaths in high schools, starts today.

Substance abuse education should start earlier than high school, said eighth-grader Winter Strong, a Prevention Club member.

“Middle schoolers, they might have parents who have been affected by alcohol,” Winter said. “(Anybody) can be affected by alcohol. (This) is kind of like counseling. The people who aren’t (affected), if they have the compassion, they can help this from spreading.”

Rena Sherill, 42, was not as lucky as Bouchard. Twenty-one years ago, a drunk driver slammed into her car and critically injured her 16-month-old son, Tyler. He was declared brain dead, and Sherill eventually took him off of life support.

“Somebody made a choice that impacted my life,” she told the audience at Wednesday’s meeting. “The person I was before my son died is gone. (But) I learned a lot of my life … through this experience.”

Sherill told the audience she refused to let Tyler’s death be for nothing. She now devotes her time to teaching young people about the dangers of driving under the influence. She sits on Longview’s Anti-Drug Coalition and teaches the Cowlitz County youth DUI course, which young people have to take when they are convicted of driving under the influence.

Huhta said talking in open forums like Wednesday’s has never been more important with the rates of marijuana use by Cowlitz County youth increasing. Sherill said since December, she’s had four marijuana DUI students in her class.

Drunk driving in Longview is also too common, Huhta said. In 2014, Longview officers responded to 200 DUI incidents, he said. The same year, four underage drivers were cited for DUI in Longview, he said.

“I’m excited you guys are making a difference in people’s lives,” Sherill told Prevention Club members. “If one person decided they’re not going to drink and drive, that’s worth every minute of my time.”

Bouchard also sang the Prevention Club’s praises Wednesday.

“We have the most amazing youth working at Mount Solo and Cascade,” she said in an interview. “They’re sitting at our City Council meetings. They’re doing what we should be doing.”

Local couple opens driving school, expanding

Local couple Andy and Lisa Harris had never planned to become driving instructors, much less owners of their own driving academy. However, in June 2013, that’s just what they did with Superior Driving Academy, located at 1251 Lexington Avenue. Nearly two successful years later, they are opening a second location in Shelby.

“We never thought of this, you know? We were just praying about the next thing we should do,” said Lisa Harris. She said she used to work as a preschool teacher and her husband, Andy, used to work with individuals with disabilities.

“It’s not that we hated our jobs, they just weren’t what we were called to be,” explained Lisa Harris.

Last year, Superior Driving Academy enrolled around 400 students, motivating the couple to expand their business to an additional location in Shelby, which is slated to open later this month.

“That’s a good start for us,” said Lisa Harris. “We’re not worried about competing with the competition. We really just want to try to turn around the statistic for 16-year-olds.”

The statistic she referenced corresponds with data from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), found in the infographic below.
Driving Stats in the U.S.

They are also searching for additional driving instructors and part-time in-class instructors.

Lisa Harris said Superior Driving Academy structures their program around busy student schedules, allowing the students to finish the instruction as quickly as possible.

“If they miss class, they can make it up whenever they want,” she said.

Their four-hour classes can be taken by students in any order, allowing them to finish the 24-hour in-class instruction on their own time or as quickly as two weeks. Students are also required to log eight hours behind the wheel with an instructor, a service Superior Driving Academy offers.

Superior Driving Academy also offers private instruction for individuals over the age of 18 for $90.

Their rates are $300 per student, but Lisa Harris said students can begin with $100 down. Once the tuition is paid in full, the student is put on the schedule. Students have the option of renting a car for the state exam for $30. Private instruction is offered at $30 per hour.

Discounts are available as well. Some local high schools offer post-cards for $15 off tuition to driving academies. SCRIP also offers an eight percent discount on tuition for Superior Driving Academy. Superior Driving Academy also offers a $25 discount for families with more than one child.

Andy and Lisa Harris work in tandem for their expanding business. They each said they love their jobs because of the opportunity to make a positive impact on young lives.

The behind-the-wheel time for Lisa is the most rewarding, she said. “It’s fun; I love my job. These are the next generation of drivers and I get to steer them in the right direction.”

“The biggest thing that I enjoy is being able to have an impact on young people before they hit adulthood. We’re doing something that is going to affect them for the rest of their lives or as long as they’re driving,” said Andy Harris.

Vietnam’s bikers race to upgrade as auto sales explode

HANOI (Reuters) — Hoang Hai turned his back on a Vietnamese business that was headed for bankruptcy and became a driving instructor instead. Now he is riding a wave of interest in car ownership as the country’s trend-setting middle class swaps two wheels for four.

The Hanoi driving school where Hai works is inundated with people eager to get behind the wheel. About 300 have applied each month so far this year, double the rate in 2014.

Hai, 45, says at least eight out of 10 learners don’t own a car, but they all want one. “As soon as there is an intention to buy a car, they’ll take a driving lesson,” he said.

Famous for its swarms of scooters, Vietnam is seeing auto sales surge amid the rapid expansion of a young, style-conscious middle class after 15 straight years of economic growth of over 5 percent.

While major regional car markets Indonesia and Thailand saw annual declines in auto sales last year, Vietnam’s leapt 43 percent, Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association or VAMA data showed. Toyota, Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Honda reported solid annual sales increases, despite high import taxes.

The number of households in Vietnam with financial assets of $100,000 to $2 million will soon be among the fastest-growing in the world, according to Economist Intelligence Unit research, fuelling luxury vehicles sales in a country where gross domestic product per capita is still only about $1,500.

Porsche Cayennes and Bentleys can nowadays be seen jostling with budget cars and scooters on the chaotic boulevards of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

BMW says its sales in Vietnam since 2007 have jumped an average 20 percent to 30 percent annually, with more units sold in the past two years than the more populated Philippines, though still far behind more developed Thailand and Malaysia.

“Vietnamese are very entrepreneurial,” Horst Herdtle, head of importer BMW Euro Auto Vietnam, said. “They want their cars to reflect that success.”

Importers say that while high taxes are putting the brakes on Vietnam’s auto market, some of these obstacles should disappear in 2018 when import duties on cars traded among Southeast Asian countries are removed.

Andreas Klingler, general director of Porsche’s Vietnam importer, said there was a waiting list of almost 100 people for the German sports cars, and most customers wanted their rides customized.

“Most of our clients prefer to configure their own dream car,” Klingler said in an email.

While importers eagerly await the lowering of regional tariff barriers, the domestic auto manufacturing industry is bracing for tough times.

Toyota Vietnam president Yoshihisa Maruta told reporters last week the company was considering whether to continue its assembling operation in Vietnam, as importing complete cars from other Southeast Asian countries would be cheaper in 2018.

Motorcycle salesmen are also nervous about the future.

Registered motorcycles in Vietnam, where one in two citizens owns a bike, fell annually from about 3.3-3.7 million units during 2011-2013 to 2.92 million last year, according to official data in state media. Resident motorcycle makers include Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and Piaggio.

For many who can afford it, upgrading is a must, not just from motorcycles, but to as flashy a ride as possible.

“Once you drive cars, you no longer want to ride bikes,” said Doan Van Tuan, an employee of a government firm, as he inspected the new BMW X6 model at its Hanoi launch.

“You hang out with your friends whose cars are nicer than yours — you have to look at the trend and think again.”

Centennial Secondary students get a lesson in driving distractions

It's a message that can't be driven home enough.

Distracted driving was one of the leading causes of death on roads in British Columbia last year and students at Centennial Secondary School in Coquitlam got a chance to learn that lesson first-hand Wednesday.
Focus on driving

Cpl. Quentin Frewing of Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services said it's important for everyone to focus on driving rather than speaking on the phone, or texting when behind the wheel.

"Half of the class doesn't have their license yet, but it's the best time to get the point into their minds," Frewing said, adding that students and cellphones are rarely far apart.

The RCMP and ICBC are working together to take that message to high schools.
Cpl. Quentin Frewing

Cpl. Quentin Frewing of Coquitlam RCMP Traffic Services said distracted driving was the biggest cause of death on B.C. roads last year.

"Those cell phones are so tempting," he said. "They buzz and ring...and you don't realise you've looked at it for longer than a few seconds."

But that's all it takes to have an accident.

Students did driving simulations and a walking/texting obstacle course to experience how dangerous it is to be distracted while moving.
Student reaction

Grade 11 students Louis Mair and Narissa Velji tried the activities and said the concentration it takes to drive while distracted was difficult.

Both of them drive with a parent and said they put their phones away and on silent when they drive.

"It's too dangerous," Mair said.

Kathleen Nadalin, ICBC road safety co-ordinator, said drivers are four times more likely to be in a crash if they use a cell phone.

"British Columbians die each year due to texting and talking," she said, adding speeding and impaired driving are among the leading causes of road deaths.

Distracted driving also carries a penalty. If caught you could be fined $167 and get three demerit points.

Woman's driving lesson before caravan park death crash

A woman has told a court how her boyfriend was teaching her how to drive minutes before their car struck a pensioner who died at a caravan park.

Kylie Johnston said she was sitting on Nathaniel Cooper's knee and steering the car before he took control.

Mr Cooper, 30, is alleged to have struck Andrew MacKay after losing control of the vehicle at the caravan park in Cumineston, near Turriff.

He denies causing death by dangerous driving.

The High Court in Aberdeen has heard that 65-year-old Mr MacKay died of chest injuries following the incident, which happened on 21 July 2013.

Ms Johnston, 26, claimed Mr Cooper told her to sit on his knee as they were on their way back to the holiday park from a garage.

She said she was scared because she had never driven a vehicle before and relied on him telling her what to do.

But she said she eventually let her former partner take control of the steering wheel after the car entered Balthangie Caravan Park at Cumineston.
'Car stalled'

Ms Johnston, of Stonehaven, said the 4x4 went out of control and crashed into a static caravan on the site.

The vehicle also struck Mr MacKay, who ended up trapped underneath his holiday home and died at the scene.

Cooper, of Inverbervie, is accused of causing the pensioner's death by driving dangerously.

Giving evidence, Ms Johnston said: "I wasn't sure to start off with, but he kept saying 'come on, come on, sit on my knee. I will teach you how to drive', tapping his legs."

Advocate depute Andrew Brown asked: "Did you get in through the driver's door?"

She replied: "On his knee. Yes.

"He was showing me the pedals down at the bottom and he told me to push my foot right down on the clutch and then the accelerator, and then lightly he said, and the car stalled three times.

"After that I was just holding on to the steering wheel."

Ms Johnston told the court that Mr Cooper took control of the steering after the car veered too close to a building on the site.
'Out of control'

She said: "I really relied on him, I didn't know what I was doing.

"Everything happened so quick. The car was going about all over the place and everything.

"The car was going out of control. I was trying to find the brake and remember what he had told me."

Ms Johnston, who is 4ft 11in tall, said she slid down to find the pedals before the car crashed into the caravan.

The jury has heard that she previously pleaded guilty to a charge relating to the case and the plea was accepted by the Crown.

The trial continues.

Man accused of crashing car while getting driving lesson from teen son

A day at the park for one family ended with a night in jail for the father after he mistakenly drove the family car onto a baseball field while receiving a driving lesson from his teen son.
Boynton Beach police said Luckner Louis, 40, smashed a fence at Caloosa Park, at 1300 Southwest 35th Ave., just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday during the lesson from his son, 17.
A caller phoned 911 saying a silver Saturn had driven off the parking lot and onto a baseball diamond — smashing the fence and then driving erratically in the outfield. The caller said two boys got out of the car, peeled back the fence and the driver managed to get the car off the field.

After the crash, the driver — later identified as Louis — switched spots with his teen son, who then drove away from the field, police said.

Officers spotted a banged up silver Saturn driving on South Congress Avenue and pulled it over. The driver was Louis' son, and there was also a 15-year-old boy sitting in the back.

The Sun Sentinel is not identifying the teen because of his age and the nature of the crime.

Police asked the teen what happened to the car. According to the arrest report, he told them he was giving his dad a driving lesson at the park since his dad does not have a driver's license.

His dad accelerated the car and rammed the chain-link fence of the baseball field. Louis began to panic, the teen said, and frantically drove around the field looking for an exit. The teen and his little brother peeled back the fence to allow Louis to get off the field so they could go on their way.

The teen told officers he chose to drive back home since his dad couldn't. He said he didn't stay at the crash scene because he didn't think any serious damage was done to the baseball field.

According to the arrest report, the crash caused about $1,500 in damage.

Officers discovered that neither the teen nor his father had valid driver's licenses, though the teen did have a learner's permit, according to the report.

Both father and son are charged with criminal mischief. The teen also faces a charge of failure to report an accident and Louis faces a charge of leaving the scene of a crime.

The teen was sent to the juvenile detention center and Louis remains in the Palm Beach County Jail on $3,000 bail.

Professional Motorsport Racer Leona Chin Pranks Unsuspecting Driving Instructors

A professional motorsport racer from Malaysia, Leona Chin, played a prank on four unsuspecting driving instructors. To prepare for the prank, Leona had a makeover to make her appear a little “clueless”. With a Spongebob Squarepants shirt and pigtails, Leona played the part of a slightly nervous new driver. However, at the end of her disastrous driving lesson, she puts the pedal to the metal and shows the instructors her skills.

The viral video was uploaded by MaxMan TV and has been viewed over 6.1 million times since it was uploaded three days ago. MaxMan notes that a driving school approached them about the prank as they had four new instructors starting that day. You can watch as “clueless” Chin takes her place in the driver’s seat. After a series of horrendous gear shifts, bad turns, stalls and exceptionally poor driving skills, the instructors seem to all agree that Chin needs more lessons. However, the girl begs for one more chance and immediately peels out and shows them some of her drifting skills.

The female instructor can be heard shrieking in terror while she clinches onto her seat belt. One male instructor seems to be clutching his chest as if he is about to have a heart attack. A third instructor becomes a bit irate and screams a few expletives. The angry instructor screams, “stop the f***ing car” to no avail. He also informs Chin that she almost “hit the people.” Chin seems unconcerned and continues showing off her extreme driving skills.

Once the ride is over, all the instructors look shell-shocked. However, the expletive-screaming instructor seems to have had enough and exclaims, “You almost killed me!” while exiting the vehicle in fury. The other three instructors seemed to be good sports about the whole ordeal and stopped to pose for photos with Leona Chin after the extreme driving lesson.

These aren’t the first passengers to take an unsuspecting ride with a professional racer. In fact, professional NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon pranked an unsuspecting car salesman for a Pepsi ad.
