High Schoolers Stranded At Prom After Pot Brownies Lead To Limo Driver Arrest

A group of metro Detroit students were left stranded at their high school prom, because their limousine driver was arrested and taken away by police.
The whole thing unfolded Thursday night as students from Berkley High School were celebrating their senior prom at Andiamo Banquet Center on 14 Mile Road in Warren.
When the end of the night rolled around, a group of students went to board their limousine party-bus — but the school principal blocked their way, saying no one was allowed back on the bus and that the students needed to call their parents for a ride home.
“Apparently, what transpired is some seniors had come back onto the bus and were doing things they were not supposed to be doing,” a parent, whose child was a part of the group, told WWJ’s Laura Bonnell.
When two students apparently started getting sick, employees at Andiamo were alerted to the situation, and they notified police. Officers arrived on the scene and after talking with several students, determined that the two students had apparently consumed pot brownies.
Officers at the scene searched the limo bus and its driver, per department policy, and discovered that the driver was wanted for a probation violation stemming from a felony assault conviction in Wayne County. At that point, the driver was placed under arrest and taken straight to jail, according to police, and the limo bus was ordered impounded.
The two students involved were taken to the hospital for observation before being released to their parents. School officials say only one of them attends Berkley High School. It’s unclear if the pair will face any charges.
A school spokesperson confirmed the incident, adding that all students made it home safely from the prom.
However, disputing the parent’s story about what exactly happened is Jessica Stilger, Communications Supervisor for Berkley Schools.
She wants to make it clear that students are never permitted to go back and forth from prom to a bus or limo unsupervised.
“Our students, if their forget something on their buses, are supervised by a chaperon or one of the principals,” Stilger said. “They grab their items they’ve forgotten and are supervised all the way back to the door.”
The incident has left many parents with conflicted feelings, but one thing is for sure — they want someone to be held accountable.
“I was extremely happy that my son was not involved in it and there were no injuries, but I’m enraged because the limo company didn’t do its job, having a felon driving my children around,” one parents said. “There needs to be an accountability issue here with that limo company.”

Dearborn Heights-based Entertainment Express Limo, which owns the impounded bus, said they had no comment on the incident before quickly hanging up the phone.

There remains a shortage of substitute bus drivers, to the point that administrators are getting behind the wheel to make sure teams and students get where they need to be.

Spring event start times for Eastwood athletes have been backed up for lack of drivers.

Athletic Director Jeff Hill sent a community email earlier this month that start times for away events have changed.

“This has occurred due to transportation issues that have occurred on our end due to a shortage of drivers. In many cases the earliest we can get a bus for an away contest will be 4 p.m.”

He said sub bus drivers have had to take regular routes, diminishing even more the number of drivers.

Transportation Coordinator Sue Volschow and Director of Operations Phil Donaldson have had to drive a trip to help get teams to their away games, according to Hill.

Late in 2014, the Eastwood school board approved a pay increase to $15.20 for substitute drivers. Next school year that will go up to $15.47, according to Volschow. That is what’s paid for a regular route; the amount paid for field trips is a bit lower, she said.

“We actually have a few routes that are open that we fill from the sub pool,” she stated.

There are a couple subs that drive every day, she added.

“I would like to have just a nice bank of subs, to take turns and give them as much or as little as they want.”

Jeff Culler, transportation director at Rossford, said he and his mechanics often drive because of a lack of substitutes. The district pays $13.50 per hour and also pays for the training.

Drivers must have a commercial driver license (CDL) and also take school bus driver classes.

“In my 35 years this is the worst I have seen recruiting drivers, often it goes with the economy,” he said. “A few years ago during the recession of 2007-2010 we maintained well with subs.”

With less unemployment it’s hard to find drivers, he added.

“Bus driving is a huge responsibility and when there are jobs out there with same pay and benefits with less responsibility it is difficult for schools to recruit, train and maintain school bus drivers,” he stated.

Bowling Green has five people who actively drive as substitutes, according to Transportation Director Carlton Schooley. “We could always use more, especially in the afternoon when we have high school and middle school athletic events wanting to leave early to get contests,” he stated.

BG drivers get paid $14.02 for morning and afternoon routes, and slightly less for field trips, he said,

School Bus Driver Pay Raises Decreased Missed Class Time

One year ago, Greenville County students missed an average of 20,800 hours of class time every day because their school buses were late.
Greenville County Schools Superintendent Burke Royster proposed a pay increase to fix the unprecedented bus driver shortage causing that lateness.
A year later, the district says it's working.
Last week, students lost 6,900 hours a day.
“Which still is not where we want to be, but much better than last year," said Greenville County Schools Transportation Director Norm Seidel.
Seidel said in 2014 Greenville County Schools' drivers were hitting the brakes on their stressful school bus careers and leaving for better-paying employers.
“To me, a school bus is a classroom on wheels,” said Seidel. “Driving and handling kids makes it the toughest job in the school system as far as I'm concerned."
At one point in 2014, the district was short 65 drivers.
So it bumped up starting pay from $11.68 an hour to $12.80.
Now the district has every route filled. It's hired 129 new drivers.
If your child's school bus is still late, Seidel said it's probably because of a broken down bus. The district averages 15-20 broken down buses every day.
“Well, you know, it is the oldest school bus fleet in the nation," said Seidel.
Greenville County mom Aerin Brownlee said she'd rather brave the car pool line than have her middle school-age son take the bus -- but it's not just about missing class time.
“He was originally going to take the bus and then we found out that it wouldn't drop him off until after 5 p.m. and school gets out at 3:15. So I didn't want him sitting on the bus that long," said Brownlee.
The school district said it's still short on substitute bus drivers who fill in when a regular driver is out. The district holds job fairs and training classes every month to try to fill those spots.
The state requires a three-year driving record check on applicants before they can drive your child's school bus. They also have to get 20 hours of training in the classroom and 10 hours of training on the road. The state requires drivers to pass a physical exam and nine different tests, including a highway sign test and a vehicle inspection test.
