High school students get valuable lesson in distracted driving

State Farm and Carilion Clinic have joined forces to put students through distracted driving simulators.

Tuesday at James River High School, students put on glasses that simulated being drunk.

They also did a driving simulator where they had to send a text message.

"It's good, because I wouldn't have known texting and driving was so dangerous otherwise, other than the demonstration," said Sophomore Travis Sisson.

"Most of our class is upperclassman, but some younger classmen will hopefully take from that to never text and drive," said Junior Rebecca Theimer.

Representatives from Carilion Clinic's trauma center also talked to students about what happens to a car during a high speed wreck.

U.S. Police Arrest Man Thought to Be Getaway Driver in Killing

Police arrested a second suspect Friday in a shooting in a Las Vegas cul-de-sac that left a mother of four mortally wounded and led to a murder charge against a 19-year-old neighbor after what initially appeared to be a road-rage killing. The arrest of Derrick Andrews, 26, in the slaying of 44-year-old Tammy Meyers became another dizzying development in a case that has brought stunning twists since the Feb. 12 shooting. Prosecutors allege that Erich Milton Nowsch Jr. fired the shots from a vehicle with Andrews at the wheel. "If you're a getaway driver, aiding and abetting another to commit a crime, you're equally guilty," District Attorney Steve Wolfson said. Police initially suspected Meyers was shot in a road rage incident. But days later, investigators revealed she had enlisted her adult son and his gun for a late-night prowl to confront a driver who threatened her on the way home from a mother-daughter driving lesson in a school parking lot. Andrews' arrest came about an hour after he was named in court along with Nowsch in an updated four-count indictment. Prosecutor David Stanton later characterized Nowsch as a neighborhood marijuana and anxiety medication dealer who hung out at a park where he encountered schoolchildren and sometimes the woman he is now accused of killing. The indictment charges Andrews and Nowsch with murder, attempted murder, firing a weapon from a vehicle and conspiracy. Trial is scheduled May 26 and the defendants could get the death penalty or life in prison if convicted. Las Vegas defense lawyer Martin Hart said he had spoken with Andrews in recent days but hadn't been hired to defend him. Hart said he might be appointed to the case when Andrews and Nowsch appear for arraignment next Thursday. Hart declined to comment on the case or the indictment. Nowsch has pleaded not guilty to the murder, attempted murder and weapon charges. He is expected to plead not guilty to the conspiracy charge that Stanton said stemmed from allegations that Andrews and Nowsch tried to erase their cellphone records to prevent police from linking them to the shooting. Nowsch's attorney, Augustus Claus, declined comment about the indictment or the arrest of Andrews. Attorney Samuel Schwartz, representing the Meyers family, pointed to what he characterized as irresponsible speculation about the family and a motive for a shooting that may have stemmed from mistaken identity. "Tammy Meyers and the Meyers family are the victims here," Schwartz said. In obtaining a no-bail warrant for Andrews' arrest, Stanton told Clark County District Court Judge Linda Marie Bell that Andrews responded in his silver Audi to a phone call late Feb. 12 from Nowsch in a neighborhood park. Nowsch feared that a green Buick Park Avenue sedan with tinted windows driving slowly back and forth in a nearby school parking lot was following him, Stanton said. "He believed the people in the car meant to do him harm," the prosecutor said. But it was simply a coincidence that Tammy Meyers' 15-year-old daughter, Kristal Meyers, was practicing driving in the lot, Stanton said. The coincidences mounted when the mother and daughter were driving home and encountered an angry driver in a silver vehicle who blocked their path, got out of his vehicle, and, according to Kristal, threatened them. Frightened, Tammy Meyers dropped Kristal off at home and instructed her 22-year-old son Brandon Meyers to come with her to find that driver, Stanton said. The prosecutor said the mother and son encountered Nowsch and Andrews in Andrews' silver sedan. "From the evidence presented, Mrs. Meyers was mistaken," Stanton said, adding that the cars she encountered that night were similar in color and design but weren't the same ones. Knowsch fired at least five shots at the green Park Avenue in a first volley of gunfire a couple of blocks from the Meyers home but didn't hit anything, Stanton said. Andrews is accused of positioning his car so Nowsch could unload what Stanton said police now believe to have been 24 shots at Tammy and Brandon Meyers. One bullet struck Tammy Meyers in the head. She died at a hospital two days later, on Valentine's Day.

Students at Wolcott High School got a lesson in safe driving habits Friday.
Juniors and seniors took part in a distracted driving awareness program where each student “test drove” in a simulator. All of their moves were recorded to see what happens when you drive distracted.
“I went right through a stop sign at one point,” said junior Julia Audibert. “I was swerving in between lanes on the highway. All I was sending was like, it was like, ‘what’s your favorite holiday,’ and I was like Christmas, and I was in the next lane.”
“I was trying to text,” said junior Bianca Bartoli. “I couldn’t even read the messages. Before I knew it I was right in front of a car and crashed.”

The school worked with local police to put the event together.

Defensive driving tips

I remember my very first driving lesson…totally exhilarating for me…not so much for my teacher a.k.a. Dad.
We were in the “Green Machine”, Dad's huge hunter green Cadillac with plush velour seats, an 8 track and some serious power. Woot! I was ready!
Sitting in a huge open empty parking lot, on a weekend where no one was around (for their safety, not mine I now realize) my mind was already on a Friday night cruising down the Waikiki Strip with my friends in the car and blasting some great music and feeling cool.
My father was probably feeling anything but cool but he didn't show it. A great teacher, he had the patience and calm voice that masked any apprehension he might have had thinking about his teenage daughter actually driving. Especially in his prized Green Machine.
The one thing I recall every time I get behind the wheel that he said to me during our first driving lesson and every lesson after was “You have to be a defensive driver.”
“What does that mean?” I asked.
“No matter how good of a driver you may think you are and whether or not you have the right of way, you have to be ready to react and defend against another driver's mistake or any given situation including accidents or bad weather. You have to be defensive and watch out for everything going on at all times.”
Well, that statement sure did hit the brakes of my fantasy of cruising obliviously down the road in my own little bubble.
That's right…there are other cars out there… hmm
People driving, people walking on the side walk, drivers changing lanes, entering the roads, people with kids in the car…. and not all of them are going to be aware or paying attention. In fact many of them will be in their own little bubble.
So it was my job, as my father pointed out, to be responsible for my personal safety and be a safe driver and be aware and ready to adapt to anything that might happen.
Years later when I moved to Vegas and did a stint in executive protection work, I took a defensive driving course and realized just how helpful dad's first driving lessons were.
The EP driving course was based on how to drive with a ‘principle' in your vehicle who you and the other agents were responsible to keep safe and protect. EP work sometimes utilized a lead and follow car, which made things easier…but this wasn't always the case. Sometimes you were solo with your client.
Many of the EP defensive driving points can be applied to daily driving for civilians and if you are transporting your family then they are your ‘principles' you are responsible to keep safe. And if you are alone, you are your own principle.
Not all of the defensive driving points can be covered in just one blog, but I will share a few basic points and in an upcoming segment that will air, we will show these points and more in action.
- BE AWARE
It is easy to be distracted or to zone out behind the wheel.
Many of us might think we could use the drive time to catch up on voice mails or think about dinner plans or think about anything else other than the actual drive that is happening in real time.
Keep in mind that we are sharing the road with other 10 ton pieces of metal being driven by other people who also might have their mind on everything but the drive…so we need to make sure we are the ones who are aware, in the moment and alert.
-CHECK YOUR 6, AND EVERY OTHER DIRECTION AROUND AND CHECK THEM OFTEN
Know what's behind you not just in the lane behind you but also what cars are behind that car as well as in any other lanes and off the roads, along side you and in front of you. Check your rear view mirrors and your side mirrors often. Situations will change often and quickly and if for some reason you have to brake or move forward or to the sides suddenly you want to know what's around so you can react and adapt accordingly.
-HAVE YOUR OWN DANCE SPACE AND KEEP IT A NICE BIG WIDE ONE
We all know that tail gate driver who wants to cram up on to the car in front of them as if somehow that action is going to make traffic move faster. Don't be ‘that guy'.
We want to keep a nice roomy bubble of space in front of us, behind us and to the sides of us in case we need that space and time to move out of the way if something happens and we need to get off the road.
We need to keep room to maneuver.
- DO NOT STOP RIGHT AT THE LINE AT RED LIGHTS AND DO NOT BE ALIGNED WINDOW TO WINDOW WITH THE CARS ALONGSIDE YOU
Why? In the EP world one of the reasons is because we don't want our principle to be in the line of fire for anything. Weird looks, gun fire, items thrown into our cars, photos taken, you name it.
Well, you are your own principle and your family is too. Keep out of the line of fire and stop where you aren't aligned with the ‘Creepy McCreeperson' next to you.
And why not stop right at the line at an intersection?
Because if some yahoo is busy texting and strikes the car behind your or your car and you are right at the line, you can be pushed into the intersection…exactly where we do not want to be. Leave some safety space.
-DON'T ADVERTISE YOUR VALUABLES ON THE SEATS AND LOCK YOUR DOORS
Keep the purses, gym bags, latest purchase from Best Buy and all valuables on the floor in the back behind the passenger seat rather than on the passenger seats. If we stop at an intersection and we are advertising valuables out in the open, it's easy for a criminal to smash and grab or simply open the door if you forgot to lock them and grab, especially for distracted drivers who use red lights to ‘catch up on their texts'.
Lock the doors, put the valuables out of sight, be even more aware when you have to stop.
And especially for parents with kids in the back seat or babies in car seats – make sure the doors are locked and engage the child lock so the kids can't unlock their own doors or roll down their windows.
-UNLESS YOU ARE TURNING OR EXITING, USE THE MIDDLE LANE
The side lanes are for cars that are turning. Along with being slower moving due to the turners, these side lanes are not the safest spots. If we have to stop, we are right along side where potential smash and grabbers, carjackers and problems may be as well as pedestrians who might not be paying attention and hanging over the curb half way on to the road.
-IT'S A CHESS GAME
We have to be defensive and yet offensive at the same time. Driving is all about strategy and being ready for the thing that might happen so that you can react to it, then be able to act to move away from any danger.
My dad used to play the ‘what ifs' scenarios while we were driving
“So what if that car in front of us had to slam their brakes, where would you go?”
“What if you had to hit your brakes? Who is behind you right now?”
“What about if the car to your left suddenly veered towards you? Are you clear to move?”
“What if someone jumped at your car at the light and tried to get inside? Is your door locked?”
Yes, it some of these defensive actions may seem extreme but we have to keep in mind that not everyone is nice out there and ultimately we are the ones responsible for our personal safety.
Be aware, be safe and remember, defense!

Double Decker Driving School

The information contained herein is strictly embargoed from all press, online and social media use, non-commercial publication, or syndication until Tuesday 10 March 2015.

Series overview

“When you’re out there you think you’re the world’s best driver. Until you come into an environment like this. And that’s when you come down with a bang.” - Jim Johnston, bus training officer

This new six-part documentary series for ITV focuses on the ultra-competitive world of trainee London bus drivers.

With 20 applicants for every place on the intensive six-week course, the bus drivers’ school promises to be a gateway to a steady salary and a virtual job for life. First, however, the prospective drivers must learn how to safely negotiate a ten-ton bus through London’s overcrowded streets.

The trainees are filmed from the first moment they sit behind the wheel of a bus through a set of increasingly complex manoeuvres designed to test their abilities to the limit.

Those who make it through the early stages then face the toughest assessment of all – their bus driving test, a 90-minute examination. This will determine if the trainees have what it takes to achieve their dreams, and make it as a bus driver.

If they pass this ultimate test, then every crash, every stall, and every heart-in-mouth emergency stop over the six weeks has been worth it.

Episode 1

In the first episode, a new batch of recruits are starting their six-week course at one of London’s largest double decker driving schools.

Single mum and former van driver Claire Carter is hoping that becoming a bus driver will be a smart move - with the steady salary a key motivation for her. She says: “If I do this then next year hopefully it might mean I can take my kids on holiday. They’re my babies, they’re my life.”

On her first day out on the open road Claire has a close encounter on a pedestrian crossing and nearly has a head-on collision. With the help of her instructor Alagarsamy Gopal, Claire needs to dig deep to summon the strength and the courage to stay on the course, and pursue her goal. She says: “When I got home I was so deflated. I was talking to my eldest son saying, ‘I don’t think I can do this.’ And he was like, ‘Mother, pull yourself together, you can do this.’”

Meanwhile, former recovery driver Yasin Cassim has moved to London from Gloucester to try his hand at the Double Decker driving course. He’s four weeks in and he and his instructor Mickey Welch are getting on famously, but when it comes to making mistakes, Yasin rarely believes it’s his fault.

Mickey says: “Some of them think they know it all but they don’t. If you don’t listen you won’t last long on this job. Just open your eyes.”

And when Yasin has a progress check with training officer Jim Johnston, sparks fly. After he is told off for not using the bus lane, Yasin storms off. Mickey has to resort to jokes, songs and even threats to keep his lippy trainee in line. But Yasin faces an uphill struggle to convince the instructors he has the discipline to be approved for his test, and let loose in a ten-ton bus.

Training officer Jim says: “A problem with attitude there, he doesn’t like being told what to do.”

“He was always good with kids,” said Montano of her uncle. “I remember at a young age that he was always involved in our school stuff … Ryan and I had the opportunity to take the business over in 2009 … I could see a lot of similarities between Ryan and Frank. Ryan is great with the kids (and) great with the parents. We wanted to keep this in the family.”

“He was terminally ill when he was selling the business,” Stack said. “He worked until he basically couldn't work anymore. The business was his life. He loved it so much.”

Numerous South Bay teens learned how to drive under the tutelage of Zock and that has continued under the leadership of Stack and Montano. Stack said, “trying to fill those shoes was a little tricky.”

Stack said he was on a ski lift in Big Bear one time visiting with a stranger who actually attended Behind the Wheel Driving School and referred to Frank as a legend.

Behind the Wheel Driving School works predominately with high school students, but also adults and foreign drivers who are new to this country.

“For a lot of them it's there very first time they're ever driving so they are so excited,” Stack said. “(It's special) to be a part of one of those moments in life that they'll never forget … we try to make it really great and make it fun. More important, it's about safety, teaching safety. That's our main focus.”

Stack said they have taught people from age 15 to some in their 90s.

“She was driving OK, but she just needed a brush up,” said Stack of a 91-year-old student. “After driving for so long, a lot of times people develop bad habits … we all have bad habits on the road. We just try to point those out (and) let them know you can't do (something) dangerous. It's up to them to make those changes.”

The school offers online or in-class driver education—the first step to a permit, which is not offered at high schools anymore and is required to be taken between 15 and a half to 17 and a half years old. Driver training includes three lessons at two hours each for in-car driving.

Also, when Assembly Bill (AB) 60, which requires the California Department of Motor Vehicles to issue a driver license to undocumented California residents, went into law on Jan. 1, Stack said there was a large influx of people applying at the DMV for their permit. This has caused a backlog for many of his students. In previous years, teens could go to the DMV with no appointment and get their permit the same day. Now everything is pushed back by months at all local DMVs in Hawthorne, Inglewood, Culver City, Torrance and San Pedro.

“They haven't been able to get any appointments, they've stopped booking them because they are booked three months out and they stopped scheduling lessons all together. It's a bummer of a situation.”

Students do have the option of going to a Driver License Processing Center, which only offers permit and driving test services, but the closest ones to the South Bay are in Granada Hills and Stanton.
