Campbell County, VA- It's a problem in a lot of places and maybe you're even guilty of it. The Campbell County School System says drivers flying past school buses when they're stopped is something they deal with every day.
Just because you're rushing to get to work doesn't mean it's okay to pass a stopped school bus. It's dangerous, against the law, and could kill a child.
Bus driver Michael Allen says there's a lot to keep track of.
"Trying to keep your eyes on the students and on the traffic and you have kids also on the bus."
So when cars fly by when they should be stopping, it's nerve-wracking.
Michael Allen says he has a few cars pass his bus each week. And now since buses are equipped with cameras, getting the license plate number is one less thing on his mind. The video gets passed to State Police who investigate and press charges.
Sgt. Scott Cash says passing a stopped school bus is a class one misdemeanor and classified as reckless driving. That means you can get up to a year in jail and a 2500 dollar fine if you're convicted.
Director of Operations Tim Hoden says people often speed up to get around school buses making a stop, but stopping could mean saving a child's life.
Bus Driver Michael Allen says he's seen a car pass so closely to a child crossing the street, that if her mother hadn't grabbed her out of the way she'd have been hit. Remember, no amount of time saved is worth the life of a child.
