Driving instructors in Pune to give tips on how to save fuel

PUNE: Driving school instructors have been given the additional responsibility of giving information on saving fuel to those who learn from them.

Instructors attached to over 60 motor driving schools in the city recently underwent a training programme on fuel efficiency. The programme was conducted jointly by the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA). Similar workshops will be held at over 50 RTO offices across the state in the next few months.

Raju Ghatole of the Maharashtra State Motor Driving Schools Association said, "New drivers generally know very little beyond the use of accelerator, brake and clutch. They do not know how much tyre pressure to maintain, when should oil be changed and how much pressure to apply on the clutch. All these points relate to better driving practices which eventually help save fuel." Driving schools will also pay attention drivers of heavy vehicles.

Anil Vanraj, who runs a garage in Shivajinagar, said his customers often complain of poor mileage. "Drivers do not maintain adequate tyre pressure, lubricants are of poor quality and air cleaners are not changed frequently. This adds to fuel consumption. The efficiency of engine is also affected," Vanraj said.

An RTO official said that motor driving schools will have to ensure that every applicant is given lessons in fuel efficiency. They will also be required to prepare leaflets and distribute them among drivers. The RTO will prepare hoardings.
