SOMERSET and Devon Driving Instructors are taking part in a
nationwide relay to raise funds for the 2014 BBC Children in Need
charity.
The Big Learner Relay is a relay of a roof box from one driving lesson to another throughout the route. The roof box is covered in different sized coloured spots, which is a fun feature of the relay, and it also carries the legendary Pudsey Bear mascot.
Driving school cars throughout the nation are now being covered in spots which can be sponsored to raise money for Children in Need.
Sponsors can write a message onto their chosen spot, which all adds to the fun.
The Big Learner Relay is the brain-child of Louise Walsh, a Hampshire Driving Instructor and mum, who will travel in all the lead cars.
Louise’s initial aim was to raise £5,000 but 2 days before the start of the relay, this amount has been hugely exceeded and today’s amount now stands at a huge £8,895!
The relay will begin on October 30th in Northern Ireland and will cover an amazing 2130 miles across Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England, finishing in Birmingham on Friday, November 14.
Learner drivers, accompanied by their instructors, will drive one of the 147 legs, followed by a convoy of other driving school cars and anyone else who would like to join in with the fun!
The first local leg is led by Bryan Booth of Booth School of Motoring, who will travel from Houndstone Retail Park in Yeovil to Ilminster on Monday 10th November, followed by Lucy Vaughan in Learn in Herbie at 2pm, travelling from Ilminster's Little Chef to Honiton.
On 11th November, Helen Levett from Focus Driver Training will travel from Tiverton McDonalds at 1pm to Taunton Asda, then hand over to Pip Godson from Alpha Driving School at 2pm.
Pip will lead the way to Highbridge's Asda and hand over at 3pm to Steve Page of Sally’s Driving School, who will drive to Bristol. Everyone is welcome to join the convoy at any point.
If you would like information about a convoy near you, please visit the Big Learner Relay’s website at www.biglearnerrelay.co.uk or visit them on Facebook. We have a "Big Learner Relay - Somerset" page, and we welcome any queries via this page. This is just the first year of many for the Big Learner Relay so please, please support it!
Donating is easy! To sponsor a spot, just text PASS73 then add the amount in £ and send to 70070. Or donate via Big Learner Relay Just Giving.
