High school students to learn life-saving driving lessons

Students from 15 metro-east high schools will learn life-saving driving lessons through the “Drive for Tomorrow” week-long event at the Gateway Convention Center in Collinsville.
The annual event, sponsored by the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and local sponsors, promotes teen safe driving. Vehicle crashes are the No. 1 killer of teens.
In an effort to combat this tragic statistic, the “Drive for Tomorrow” program, which runs through Friday, will bring driver education students together with trained professionals to identify driving hazards and teach skills to prepare these young drivers for the road.
Through hands-on activities, students will learn about work zone and motorcycle safety, sharing the road with commercial vehicles, drowsy and distracted driving, seat belt use, the consequences of driving impaired and other risky driving behaviors.

Two hundred-fifty teens and their advisers from throughout Illinois convened in Springfield Oct. 20 and Oct. 21 for the fifth annual DomeShift event. The youth advocacy/teen traffic safety event took place at the Abraham Lincoln Springfield hotel and the east side of the Illinois State Capitol. The Belleville West Lifesavers, a well-established teen wellness group, attended the event.
In addition to meeting hundreds of like-minded students, the Lifesavers participated in sessions such as “What do You Consider Lethal?,” which empowered them to be a positive influence among their peers as they learned to avoid situations when driving that cause them to be distracted.
One highlight was the annual march to the state capitol on Oct. 21. All 250 teens and advisers wore matching shirts. The DomeShift event culminated with a rally and group photo on the east side of the Capitol, at the Abraham Lincoln statue.
Thirteen students from Belleville West attended and are eager to implement the advocacy ideas they learned while at DomeShift 2014. Immediately after the event, the Lifesavers registered to become part of the Illinois Students Against Destructive Decisions group.
